AUTUMN & SPRING
We recommend layering all year long! Our advice is to dress in three layers: a base layer to stay dry, a mid layer to keep warm, and an outer layer to retain heat and protect against the elements.
Shirt layers (avoid cotton and opt for synthetics)
Long sleeve baselayer
Fleece Long sleeve
Waterproof rain jacket
Long pant layers (avoid cotton and opt for synthetics)
Long baselayer
Heavy weight (fleece or wool)
Waterproof rain pants (rain pants go OVER boots)
Feet
Socks (Wool or Fleece, no cotton)
Close-toed shoes - Waterproof or water resistant are best
Neoprene (Bogs or similar) boots work great ALL YEAR LONG
Sturdy hiking shoes/boots
Close-toed sandals are okay on very warm days
Head
Warm Hat (Wool or Fleece) OR Sun Hat for very warm days
Hands
Waterproof mittens (NO gloves)
On very warm days your child may shed a layer at school, on very cool days you might add an extra layer (like a fleece vest) under the waterproof layer. Seasonally, you will need to apply sunscreen and/or bug spray PRIOR to the start of class.
WINTER
In addition to the previous gear, you may want to add:
Snow pants (NO bib style or one piece suits)
Waterproof, Insulated Snow Jacket (OR insulated jacket under waterproof rain jacket)
Insulated Waterproof boots
Mittens (NO GLOVES)- two layers
fleece or wool layer
heavy waterproof mittens, long-wrist style recommended (fits over jacket sleeves)
BACKPACK
All children must bring their own backpack to class each day. We recommend investing in a child-sized sturdy, rain resistant backpack instead of the novelty kind, as they hold up better in our wet weather.
BACKPACK GEAR
Please pack your child’s backpack completely every day they attend school.
Water Bottle – non spill lid (12oz is plenty large enough), fit in outer pocket of backpack
Wipes – travel size package
Kleenex or handkerchief
Large empty Ziploc or other waterproof bag
Small bottle of sunscreen and insect repellant (when appropriate)
Back-up gear (please pack in another Ziploc or other waterproof bag):
Mittens - Light/Mid weight (fleece or wool)
Warm Hat - fleece or wool
Pants - Lightweight
Long Sleeve - Lightweight
Underwear or Pull-up
Socks – wool or fleece
RECOMMENDED PLACES to LOOK:
We recommend and welcome second-hand gear whenever possible! Second-hand items reduce textile waste and are significantly more environmentally friendly than new items.
Secondhand Options: Kid to Kid, Small Threads, Sweet Rock’n Kids, Kid Savvy, Facebook Marketplace, Social Media Groups
Stores: REI Outlet.com, Sierra.com, Lands End, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, Patagonia, Columbia, REI, Oakiwear.com, Polarn O’ Pyret
TIPS:
Mittens that have long cuffs designed to go OVER your child’s jacket sleeves (such as Stonz mittens) are much easier to manage.
Do NOT wash outer layers unless absolutely necessary. Hose off mud and hang to dry. Too much washing will ruin waterproofing.
Hand-wash wool items in cold water or use a delicate cycle with cold water and a mild detergent. DO NOT DRY WOOL ITEMS.
Rain pants should fit snugly over your child’s boots, not inside them.
Your farm and forest school community is a great place to find recommendations!
